1. About Fini

Fini is an editorial platform exploring death, grief, and end-of-life through cultural, personal, and practical lenses. Fini is operated by The Liminal Group, Inc., a Delaware corporation authorized to do business in New York under the assumed name “Fini Media,” with a business mailing address at 2248 Broadway #2175, New York, NY 10024.

The Services are open to read and do not require a user account, login, password, or registration. Personal information is collected only when you voluntarily provide it (for example, by subscribing to our newsletter or submitting a story) or automatically through standard web analytics and cookies.

2. Information We Collect

  • Email Address – When you sign up for our newsletter, request updates, or submit a story.
  • Name – If you choose to provide it (for example, in a newsletter signup or contact/submission form).
  • Submission Content – The text, narrative, essay, message, or other content you submit to us through a contact or story-submission form.
  • Communications – The content of any email or other message you send us.
  • Optional Demographic or Biographical Information – If you choose to share it (for example, in a story submission or as part of a contributor bio).

Information From Third-Party Sources:

  • Email Service Providers – We may receive subscriber data from Substack, including email address, signup source, and engagement metrics. If we add additional email-delivery providers in the future, we will update this Policy accordingly.
  • Analytics and Integration Partners – We may receive aggregated information from analytics, hosting, and integration tools described in Section 7.

We do not knowingly collect Social Security numbers, government IDs, payment card numbers, or precise geolocation. Fini does not currently process payments directly through the Services. Any paid subscriptions are handled by Substack under Substack’s own terms and privacy policy.

3. How We Collect Information

We collect information through:

  • Newsletter and signup forms on our website and landing pages.
  • Story submission and contact forms on our website (currently powered by Gravity Forms).
  • Substack when you subscribe to our Substack publication.

  • Embedded third-party tools and services (described in Section 7).
  • Analytics tools that help us understand site performance and usage.
4. Cookies and Tracking Technologies (Cookie Policy)

This section serves as Fini’s Cookie Policy.

What Are Cookies? Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. We also use similar technologies such as local storage, pixel tags (also called web beacons), and software development kits (SDKs) within third-party tools. Throughout this Policy we refer to all of these collectively as “cookies.”

How We Use Cookies. We use cookies and similar technologies to:

  • operate the Services and remember your preferences (such as cookie consent choices);
  • understand how visitors use the Services (analytics);
  • diagnose technical issues and improve performance;
  • measure the effectiveness of our content and email campaigns;
  • support affiliate-link tracking and attribution; and (potentially) deliver more relevant content and, in the future, advertising.

Categories of Cookies Used On the Services:

  • Strictly Necessary / Essential Cookies – Required for the Services to function (for example, recording your cookie consent preferences via CookieYes, security functionality through Wordfence, and content delivery via WP Engine and Cloudflare).
  • Analytics and Performance Cookies – Used to understand how visitors interact with the Services. We use Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Microsoft Clarity (which may include click-tracking, scroll-tracking, and session recordings).
  • Functional Cookies – Remember choices you make, such as your cookie consent preferences.
  • Marketing / Affiliate / Tracking Cookies – May be set in connection with affiliate links (such as Amazon Associates, ShopMy, or LTK) or, in the future, advertising or sponsored placements. These cookies may track clicks and conversions to attribute commissions or measure campaign performance.

Managing Cookies. You can manage your cookie preferences for the Services through our CookieYes consent banner and preference center, available on the Services. Most web browsers also let you block or delete cookies through your browser settings; for more information, consult your browser’s help documentation. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-On (https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout). For interest-based advertising opt-outs, you can visit the Network Advertising Initiative (https://optout.networkadvertising.org), the Digital Advertising Alliance (https://optout.aboutads.info), or the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance (https://www.youronlinechoices.eu).

If you reject non-essential cookies, certain features of the Services may not work as intended.

5. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • operate, maintain, and improve the Services;
  • deliver our newsletter and other editorial content, announcements, and updates from Fini, and respond to your story submissions, questions, and other communications;

  • measure the performance of our content and email campaigns;
  • detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, security incidents, and unlawful activity;
  • comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Use; and communicate with you about Fini, including changes to our policies.

We do not sell your personal information for money. We do not engage in profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. As described in Section 4, we (or our service providers) may use cookies and similar technologies that, under some state privacy laws, are considered “sharing” or “sale” of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising purposes. You can opt out of these activities as described in Section 12.

This information is governed by those parties’ privacy policies, not ours.

FTC Affiliate Disclosure. Every product featured on Fini is independently selected by our editors. If you buy something through links in this article, Fini may earn an affiliate commission. Please review the affiliate disclosure on our Services for more information.

In the future, the Services may include sponsored content, advertising, or paid partnerships. If and when we introduce these, we will update this Policy and provide appropriate disclosures.

13. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this Policy, comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Specifically:

  • Email Subscriber Data is retained while you remain subscribed and for a reasonable period after unsubscribing for recordkeeping and to honor opt-out requests.
  • Story Submissions that we publish may remain available indefinitely as part of our editorial archive. Submissions we do not publish are typically deleted within twelve (12) months unless we have a reason to keep them (for example, you have asked us to consider the piece for a future feature). After publication, we will consider reasonable requests to remove or anonymize a published Submission, but we are not obligated to do so.
  • Analytics and Cookie Data is retained according to the retention settings of each tool (for example, Google Analytics retention is typically set to 14 months).
  • Security and Legal Records are retained as long as needed to address security and legal obligations.
14. Security

We use commercially reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information, including hosting on WP Engine, security monitoring with Wordfence, encryption-in-transit (HTTPS), and reliance on the security controls of our service providers. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

Reporting a Security Issue. If you believe there is a security vulnerability or issue with the Services, please contact us promptly at help@itsfini.com. Please include a clear description of the issue and any information needed to reproduce or verify it.

15. International Users

The Services are operated from the United States and are primarily intended for U.S. audiences, but they are accessible globally. If you access the Services from outside the United States, you understand that your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country. By using the Services, you consent to such transfer and processing, subject to applicable law. Where required (for example, for transfers from the EEA or UK), we rely on appropriate transfer mechanisms such as the Standard Contractual Clauses.

16. Do Not Track

Some browsers offer “Do Not Track” signals. Because there is no industry consensus on how to interpret these signals, the Services do not currently respond to them. We do honor opt-out preferences submitted via Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals where required by applicable law.

17. Links to Third-Party Sites

The Services link to third-party sites (including affiliate retailers, social media platforms, and Substack). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third parties. Their use of your information is governed by their own privacy policies.

18. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the revised Policy on the Services and update the “Effective Date” above. If the changes are material, we will provide additional notice (such as a banner on the Services or an email to our subscribers). Your continued use of the Services after the revised Policy takes effect constitutes your acceptance of the changes.
